Getting older is not all bad. Learn the positives of the aging process and how home care services can help a senior experience more in life.

A simple Google search for the word “aging” brings up topics such as “coping with aging,” “what you can do about aging,” and even “the cure to aging.” The negative connotations to aging are, sadly, so ingrained within our culture that it’s estimated that by 2024, the anti-aging industry will exceed $271 billion.

While it’s not hard to get caught up in the issues which may be realized in growing older – health conditions, the death of friends and family, and cognitive issues – what’s getting lost in the shuffle are the incredible benefits of aging. Consider, for instance:

  • A recent study by Stony Brook University found that the elderly are happier overall, with reportedly decreasing feelings of frustration and anxiety in later years.
  • Socialization and conflict resolution skills are better in old age, reported by research performed by the University of Michigan.
  • In a game targeted to stimulate and examine regret, older adults outperformed their younger counterparts in their capacity to manage emotions.
  • And according to Cornell sociologist Karl Pillemer who surveyed 1,200 elderly people, the consensus was that the past 5 or 10 years had been the most memorable of their lives. “Many people said something along these lines: ‘I wish I’d learned to enjoy life on a daily basis and enjoy the moment when I was in my 30s instead of my 60s,’” Pillemer shares.

Not only that, but retired adults have the opportunity to investigate and pursue interests and talents minus the time limitations of younger, employed adults, which often can produce a revitalized zest for life, new social ties, and increased bonds with existing family and friends.

North River Home Care helps emphasize the positives of the aging process in many ways.
