Those who’ve ever spent time with young children know what a treasure trove of creativity results from a basket filled with miscellaneous odds and ends. Popsicle sticks, buttons, clothes pins, and paper clips can be transformed from their typical mundane uses into princesses, dragons, race cars, or a family of teddy bears – the possibilities are endless!
Just because we grow older doesn’t mean we have to lose the creative ability to turn everyday items into something new! In fact, these ideas take everyday items and turn them into useful tools for older adults!
- Place a bar of soap inside an old stocking and hang from the shower, to keep the soap from falling into the tub and creating a fall hazard. And, washing with the stocking-wrapped soap provides the added benefit of exfoliation.
- Wrap rubber bands around cups to improve gripping ability.
- Secure a straw to a drinking glass with a traditional wooden spring-operated clothes pin.
- Use a drop of nail polish on telephone buttons that are used most often, such as the “answer” button.
While high-tech gadgets are fascinating, studies show that the majority of older adults are reluctant to learn how to use them, preferring to make use of items with which they’re already comfortable.
