Are you taking care of your parents? A spouse or relative? You are not alone!

According to the American Society of Aging, it is estimated that roughly one quarter of American adults are presently caring for an aging parent or relative, and nearly half this group is providing care for their spouse.  There are an estimated 650,000 Family Caregivers in Massachusetts alone! (NAFC as of 2004).

While family caregiving is often a very rewarding and bonding experience, it can also be stressful and cause tension within families. Family caregiving can become even more stressful if the caregiver has other responsibilities such as work and children. Resentment and tension are common feelings among family caregivers.

Caregiving can be particularly difficult for a spouse, especially if the spousal caregiver has his or her own health issues. They can be exacerbated by the stress and lack of attention to their own needs.

Fortunately, there are a lot of resources for family caregivers, and many local support groups.
